Tahquamenon Falls In U.P. Closed Due To Wildfire

UPPER PENINSULA (WWJ) - Tahquamenon Falls State Park in Michigan's Upper Peninsula is closed because of a wildfire that has burned more than 21,000 acres.

State officials describe it as long and narrow, stretching 11 miles north to Lake Superior.

Ed Golder of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources spoke live with WWJ about the continuing blaze. The fire, located in Luce County, north of Newberry in the U.P., started last Wednesday as the result of a lightning strike.

More than 100 emergency responders from Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota continue to work to contain the blaze.

Access has been tricky because there are few roads. The fire began Wednesday after a lightning strike. More than 40 structures have been threatened and six are lost. It's not clear whether they were homes or outbuildings.
