Camping Locally Can Mean Fast And Easy Fun

MILFORD (WWJ) - Not everyone was able to enjoy a long Memorial Day weekend off but that doesn't mean you can't make summer fun plans.

If you're thinking (now) that a week off might be a good idea, keep in mind, you don't have to drive three or four or five hours to go camping.

Joe Brothers is Recreation Supervisor at Camp Dearborn in Milford and he recommends keeping it local.

"With the increase in gas prices, people have been a little more hesitant to drive, you know, six hours up north. When you can get the very similar experience in the metro Detroit area, just 45 minutes away ... that has helped," said Brothers.

He says there are a number of cabin styles to chose from on the camp grounds.

"Some have full amenities, full size bed, kitchenette outside of the cabin and they are right on the lake," said Brothers.

There are numerous, local, state- and privately-run campgrounds, like Camp Dearborn in Milford which has cabins for rent.

  •  "Family" cabins cost $610 a week.
  •  More rustic cabins are just $285 a week.
  •  Rental tents and spaces for your own tent or camper nightly or weekly go for even less.

All rentals include the camp's two lakes, beaches, fishing, paddle boats, kids events and activity center;
plus, access to the Milford Trail, canoe rental and private livery service on the Huron River; and all within easy biking distance or even walking to Downtown Milford, Kensington Metro Park and Trail.

The camp is no longer "For Dearborn Residents Only," but it is still operated by the city, and you can also call 313-943-2350 for more information.
