Testimony Begins In Detroit Attempted Rape Case

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Testimony began Thursday in the case of an 18-year-old Detroit man who police have called a serial attacker.

Job Hughley is charged with shooting a woman during a rape attempt. His preliminary examination is being held in Detroit's 36th District Court.

Hughley is accused of approaching a 37-year-old woman who was pushing her 6-month-old daughter in a stroller. Prosecutors said he led her at gunpoint to the rear of a building and forced her to strip.

When she attempted to run from the defendant, prosecutors say he shot her in the back with a hand gun. She managed to escape to the front of the building, where she and her baby, uninjured and still in the stroller, were assisted by bystanders

Hughley faces three counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, kidnapping, assault with intent to murder and felonious assault.

Hughley also will stand trial in two separate rapes.

Earlier incidents include the attack of a 22-year-old woman April 10 near Cody Middle School, and a multiple-act sex attack of a 20-year-old woman April 4 in an alley Grand River and Warwick.

A judge last month ordered Hughley to stand trial after hearing testimony from those two women.
