Student Behind Monica Conyers' Grilling Celebrating A Milestone

DETROIT (WWJ) - Many Detroiters remember the "Shrek" comment aimed at then-City Council President Ken Cockrel by Monica Conyers, and the grilling Conyers later got from a middle school student about her behavior.

That young girl, Keiara Bell, is now celebrating a milestone.

WWJ City Beat Reporter Vickie Thomas had a chance to sit down with Bell, her mom and her dad. Bell was an 8th grader back then. Fast-forward four years and we find her graduating from Cass Tech High School -- at the top of her class. In the fall, she will attend Michigan State University.

"Right now, I'm just planning for this big step; going to college, and my major is Political Science with a minor in Vocal Music Performance," Bell told Thomas.

Looking back, what does she think of her run-in with Conyers?

"I didn't know how that was gonna work out, but it happened," Bell said. "All I can wish for her is the best."
