As a youngster watching Big Time Wrestling on Saturday afternoons I rooted for Bobo Brazil, Haystacks Calhoun and Pampero Firpo. And of course there was the guy everyone loved to hate, The Sheik. But the strangest wrestler of all would be George ‘The Animal’ Steele. He was/is a bald, Uncle Fester looking wrestler with a hairy back and a green tongue. He was famous for chewing on the turnbuckle, drooling and staring at the crowd. And as a kid who watched wrestling, I had no idea that Mr. Steele lived only 5 miles from me. I lived in Warren and he was in Madison Heights. Also unbeknownst to me, he was the head football coach at Madison High School and he is in the Michigan Coaches Hall of Fame!
Well, now his resume is complete. He recently threw out the first pitch at a Rochester Red Wings minor league game and in George The Animal Steele fashion, he chewed the ball apart before throwing it to the catcher. Who are you 4 favorite wrestlers?
