Nail Gun-Wielding Man Taserd By Police
ALLEN PARK (WWJ) - Michigan State Police say a trooper was forced to taser a man following a high-speed chase Friday morning in Allen Park.
After police received multiple calls about a vehicle was traveling recklessly on eastbound I-94 near US-23, two troopers observed the silver Dodge Charger driving at 100 miles per hour along on the shoulder, weaving in and out of traffic.
Police said the suspect continued to evade troopers along I-94 and, when he exited the freeway at Oakwood Blvd., it became apparent he posed a serious danger to himself and the public."
"At first he was just driving fast and erratic and then it became a pursuit, he was fleeing," said State Police Sergeant James Kemp. "It is unknown as this time what his particular reasons for his driving were. But that's still under investigation."
When troopers ended the pursuit using the Precision Immobilization Technique or "PIT" maneuver, a kind of intentional collision, the suspect still refused to exit the car.
The troopers broke the driver's side window and saw that the suspect, a 44-year-old man, was holding a nail gun. He was tasered and arrested without further incident.
There were no no apparent injuries, but because of the extent of damage to the vehicles the suspect was taken to the hospital for observation.
The troopers were also checked out at the hospital and released.
No names have been released.
