LHP Drew Smyly was withdrawn from his Sunday start after three innings when a blood blister appeared on his left middle finger. “The pitch before (Zack) Cozart he felt something,” manager Jim Leyland said. “Then he (Cozart) hit the home run and he (Smyly) threw a couple more pitches and it was just huge. It’s a big huge blood blister on the second finger. We just couldn’t take any chances, we had to get him out.” Smyly gave up three runs in his three innings and now has allowed 22 earned runs in his last 29 innings (six starts).
