Fire Engulfs Abandoned 5-Story Highland Park Apt. Building

HIGHLAND PARK (WWJ) - Woodward Avenue in Highland Park is open Wednesday morning, after a huge apartment fire forced emergency crews to shut it down overnight.

Fire crews had some challenges with low water pressure, after a fire ripped through the five-story, vacant apartment building on Waverley, about two blocks from Davison.

The building is behind the Highland Park post office, which was hosed down for fear that it would burn as well. High winds and dry conditions created another problem as embers blew as far as three blocks away, starting grass fires that nearby residents tried to stomp out.

Fire crews remained on the scene Wednesday morning, dousing any hot spots on all that remains of the burnt-out building.

No injuries were reported and there's no word yet as to what caused the fire.

An investigation is ongoing.
