Have It Your Way? Burger King Offers Bacon Sundae

By Christy Strawser

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) It's getting hotter by the day in metro Detroit, which means nothing tastes better than a cold lick of ice cream.

But will any old ice cream do? Forget the traditional chocolate, vanilla and strawberry, today's discerning tastebuds want something exotic.

In that vein, Burger King restaurants across the country are offering a summer special — a bacon sundae. It's a concoction of vanilla  soft serve topped with fudge, caramel, bacon crumbles and a piece of bacon on top.

The salty-sweet dessert reportedly weighs in at 510 calories, 18 grams of fat and 61 grams of sugar.

Burger King isn't alone in thinking the only thing better than bacon is more bacon. Microcreamery Treat Dreams in Ferndale sells a maple bacon ice cream that a staffer said "sells really well" and the first annual Baconfest in Royal Oak held earlier this month had a packed house.

"I think bacon has been on the upswing for a little while and people are just realizing how many things it goes with, the sweet, the savory, the salty ... I was really surprised at what some of our chefs were able to put bacon in," said Matthew Peach, organizer of Baconfest.

Royal Oak's Cafe Muse sold a bacon and butterscotch pudding at Baconfest, which Peach said "was amazing."

So what do you think, would you eat bacon ice cream?
