3 Hamtramck Firefighters Injured

HAMTRAMCK (WWJ) - Three firefighters were hurt Friday morning while fighting a fire at a vacant house in Hamtramck.

Hamtramck firefighters were battling a blaze in the 3,000-block of Edwin, near Conant and three firefighters. Hamtramck Fire Captain Chris Sanchez told WWJ Newsradio 950 that three of his crew were hurt in action.

Sanchez ,was on the scene on Edwin, said one firefighter fell through the floor and another was injured when part of the roof collapsed and he fell through to the second floor.

He said the other firefighter fell when some stairs collapsed.

Sanchez said even though the home was vacant, they have to go in to make sure that no one is inside.

Sanchez said all three injured firefighters were taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital and they're waiting to hear on their conditions..

Nearby resident Omar AlMasmari said the fire was burning near his next door neighbor's home.  He raced inside to grab the couple's three little ones and carried them over to his house to protect them from the smoke.

AlMasmari said fire crews arrived quickly -- but Sanchez said they only had four firefighters on the scene initially.

Why so few?

"Actually, that's a good question. We've always asked to have more manpower," Sanchez  said. "It's the city's, I guess, judgement call that what we have should be enough to help us do our job. But there's times when that's questionable."
