Adidas' 'Shackle' Shoes Draw Fire

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) The marketing tagline for Adidas' newest sneaker says, "Got a sneaker game so hot you lock your kicks to your ankles?"

Others don't see basketball in the purple shoes that feature bright orange manacles at the ankle -- they see the glamorization of two things: slavery or prison. The shoes go on sale in August.

Adidas has been silent so far on the controversy erupting over their "shackle" shoe, though the Facebook post unveiling the shoe has 2,321 comments -- much of it a debate about whether the shoes are right or wrong.

Windu Mace wrote on the Facebook wall: "These are awesome. If u don't like them don't buy them. If u think it's racist then u probably are RACIST. Get over it."

Aaron Sotzen chimed in: "How about we just don't buy them because you will look like a tool. Reason enough for me."

Supporting the shoe, Payton Mendygral wrote, "You guys are insane, they're just sneakers! ... They're just shackles, & it's not like you're FORCED to wear them! If you don't like them, don't but them! Simple as that. I think these shoes are pretty cool and buy the looks of it, it seems like you can clip and unclip the shackles, so calm down!"

So, what do you think, metro Detroit?
