Sore Wrist Keeps Valverde Out Of Game

It was a win, but a win with a cloud over it.

Detroit defeated St. Louis 6-3 Tuesday night, but with Phil Coke getting the save, not closer Jose Valverde, who was sitting down in dejection after feeling pain in his right wrist while throwing his last warmup pitch in the bullpen.

"It felt sore and tight," Valverde said before heading off to nearby Detroit Medical Center for an MRI. Clubhouse X-rays showed nothing abnormal.

"I don't want to be out too long," Valverde said. "I think I'll be OK."

There may have been no postgame pain in the wrist, as the closer said, but there was some anxiety in the Tigers' manager.
