Police: Girl, Father Team Up To Steal Kitten

ALLEN PARK (WWJ/AP) - Police say a 17-year-old girl who was with her father at a suburban Detroit pet store shoplifted a small, black kitten by tucking it under her shirt.

Allen Park police say the 8-week-old kitten, which was being sold for $150 at Allen Park Critter Shop, was recovered following Monday's theft. The pet shop says the kitten is ok.

Surveillance video posted by Detroit-area news stations and tips helped police identify the pair.

Names of the father and daughter weren't released. Police say they drove away together.

Store owner Rick Simms says it appeared the father encouraged the theft, which he called "pretty disturbing." Simms said the pair entered the store with another woman, who distracted an employee as the teen took the kitten, with her father looking on.

Police say that woman has yet to be identified.

No charges have yet been filed against the father, who is from Southgate, or his daughter, who is from Novi, officials said.

Video surveillance was set up in part because of past thefts.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Allen Park Police Department at 313-386-7800.
