Tiger Woods of the US watches as Phil Mickelson putts on the green on day one of the US Open at San Francisco’s Olympic Club on June 14, 2012 in California. The 112th US Open teed off early with Rory McIlroy bidding to become the first back-to-back winner of the year’s second major since 1989 but all the anticipation was at the ninth tee for the day’s marquee grouping of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson. He has proven that he can win again. Yet Tiger Woods is far from proving that he can win on golf’s greatest stage. At a major championship.
In his last three majors he has not cracked the top 20. Even with his driving as solid as ever, his short game continues to let him down in crunch time.
Witness the recent Masters (his worst performance at Augusta as a professional), and at The U.S. Open (where he absolutely choked after leading midway through).
He is also still in denial, saying after his weekend U.S. Open collapse that he ” takes a lot of positives” from the U.S.Open.
Really?
