U.S. Marine From Detroit Killed In Action In Afghanistan
DETROIT (WWJ) - A member of the U.S. Marines from Detroit was killed in combat Friday in Afghanistan. The victim was Steven Stevens, 23, a 2006 graduate of Cass Tech High School, and a state champion swimmer.
Stevens' uncle, Dwight Atkins, told WWJ he wants his nephew to be remembered for his joy.
"He was such a joy to be around," Atkins said. "Anybody who knows him would know how funny he was. He was always good for a laugh; he'd keep you laughing, always showing all his teeth all the time. I just want people to know how much fun he was, and people that know him would tell you that."
Stevens leaves behind a wife and 3-month-old son, whom he'd never seen.
A funeral is tentatively planned for Saturday at Hope United Methodist Church in Southfield.
