Detroit Police: 282 Juveniles Cited At Fireworks

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Detroit police say they cited 282 juveniles for curfew violations during the annual Detroit-Windsor freedom festival fireworks show over the Detroit River.

Thousands of people packed the riverfronts in the Michigan and Ontario border communities for Monday night's show. The Target Fireworks were produced by The Parade Co.

Before the show, police said they would enforce a law requiring those age 17 and younger to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Detroit police say they gave out about 150 parental responsibility citations and arrested five adults for disorderly conduct.

There had been discussion about closing the Riverwalk due to safety concerns, but decided to keep it open.

To assist with crowd control, Detroit police force got support from state police and sheriff's deputies from Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties.

Mayor Dave Bing has said this will be the last year for the Detroit fireworks unless private donors or sponsors step up to fund security as well as the show.
