Wooley's Weekly Winners 7-13-12

By: Ryan Wooley

With the Midsummer Classic now behind us, that means that summer is now half over and another week has come to a close. In honor of the All Star Game this week, I'm going to limit my weekly winners to a team or someone within Major League Baseball. Feel free to follow me on Twitter @WooleyMammoth85 and let me know if you agree and if not, who you would put on the list.

It's not very often you get to see someone do something that's never been done in sports before, but we were all witnesses to something new on Monday night as Prince Fielder won the 2012 Home Run Derby.

Fielder becomes the only player to win the competition in both the American and National leagues.

It actually didn't look good for Fielder early on as he barely escaped the first round with just five homeruns, but rebounded nicely in the second round with 11 and added 12 in the finals to finish with 28.

He also hit the longest ball of the night of 476 feet.
The National League

We see it all the time in sports when a team gets a roll and either rattles off an impressive win streak or hits a run of bad luck and piles up the losses, and the National League knows that all too well in the All Star Game.

The NL couldn't win the big game falling to the American League 12 out of 13 years from 1997-2009, with the only "win" during that span coming in 2002 when both teams tied.

But now the AL has found themselves on the wrong side of the win/loss column as the NL has won three straight, which is the first time since 1994-1996.
Justin Verlander

Rumors have been running wild that Justin Verlander and Kate Upton are an item or at least dating and I think it's a great thing not only for those two, but the state of Michigan as well.

With JV getting as much pub nationally as he has been getting because of his MVP and Cy Young awards, and Kate Upton being from Michigan and on the cover of Sports Illustrated, this just continues to make Michigan and Detroit for that matter look good.

Hopefully there isn't some terrible fight down the road and they rip each other in the media, but for the time being all of us males can only wish we were Verlander so we could get with Upton, while all females can only wish they were Upton so they could get with Verlander.
