Log Jams Being Removed From Red Cedar River

MERIDIAN TWP. (AP) - An effort is under way is remove log jams on the Red Cedar River in mid-Michigan.

The Lansing State Journal reports piles of wood were removed from the river on Monday, and the water level dropped a foot within hours.

The newspaper says the removal of the first of four jams on the river's main branch began on Friday

According to Ingham County Drain Commissioner Patrick Lindemann, removing the jams will address neighbors' concerns about potential flooding.

Lindemann says "the volume of debris pulled out of" one jam "was enormous."

Crews also removed household trash, including tires, plastic buckets, a milk crate and a child's stroller, from the water.
