Lower Hitters In Order Start Making Bigger Contribution

The bottom of Detroit's lineup is no longer on the bottom.

The Tigers' fifth- through ninth-place hitters were taking some deserved abuse through the first three months of the season, cited as one of the key reasons Detroit was not living up to lofty preseason expectations.

But with Detroit on an 8-1 roll, a key reason has been greatly improved performance by the last five hitters in the batting order.

In the Tigers' last 10 games, the bottom five are hitting a collective .308 with 32 RBI.

"Things are starting to click," said Quintin Berry, who hits second most often but also has been slotted ninth. "Everybody's comfortable, everybody's doing their job."

"Delmon (Young) came up with a couple big hits, one a sacrifice fly," manager Jim Leyland said Monday after the Tigers beat the Angels 8-6. "We got contributions from a lot of different people."

No. 5 hitter Young had an RBI single in the fifth and a score-tying sacrifice fly in the seventh.
