Detroit Boy Dies After Fall From Window

DETROIT (WWJ) - A 9-year-old boy is dead after he fell from a ninth story window near Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

A police spokesperson said it happened at around 5:45 p.m. Wednesday at an apartment building on the 2500-block of West Grand Boulevard.

Jerod Barnett's family and neighbors said the little boy knew he was going to be in trouble for stealing from a nearby store. So when his sister told on him, he ran to the window of the family's ninth floor apartment at the Young Manor Complex and either jumped or fell out of the window.

Police rushed Barnett to Henry Ford Hospital in a squad car where he was declared dead on arrival.

Police say their preliminary investigation indicates that Barnett, in the past, has made threats of committing suicide.

This is the second falling death in recent days in Detroit. On Wednesday, a 49-year-old woman was on her second story balcony when the iron railing collapsed and she fell 20 to 25 feet to the ground. Read more, here.
