Phil Mickelson is wearing two gloves and a watch as he hacked his way around an ugly first round at The Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St. Anne’s. Wearing a glove on each hand despite no rain or cold when he has worn only one glove his entire career is perplexing. But wearing a time piece on his wrist is inexplicable. Are there no clocks on the golf course? Oh wait. There is a clock on every tee. Does he have a lunch date?

Tiger Woods predictably played almost all irons off the tees in his first round of three under 67 in very benign conditions. The only fairway he missed was with a wood that resulted in a bogey.

The course is actually green and slow, completely the opposite of what you expect at a British Open. Without strong winds, this course plays more like an American course.
