Police: Man Slain At Vigil For Homicide Victim

BATTLE CREEK (WWJ/AP) - Authorities say a 21-year-old Battle Creek man has been fatally shot while attending a vigil marking the third anniversary of the death of another homicide victim.

Police say Ravon McKinley was shot early Thursday in Battle Creek.

McKinley had been attending a vigil for his friend, 19-year-old Dominique McKinney, when an argument began and shots were fired, according to police. McKinney died after a July 2009 shooting.

The vigil started early Wednesday and was mostly over by the time the shooting happened.

McKinney's grandmother, Yvonne Townsend of Battle Creek, says a vigil has been held each year since his death and there previously weren't problems.

Townsend said she's been waiting three years for police to find her grandson's killer. Thursday's shooting also was under investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Battle Creek Police Department at 269-966-3375 or Silent Observer at 269-964-3888.
