Detroit Lions Release Aaron Berry

DETROIT (97.1 The Ticket/AP) - The Detroit Lions announced Monday morning they have released CB Aaron Berry, the latest in a string of players with off-season legal issues.

Berry was arrested this weekend in Harrisburg, Penn., and charged with three counts of simple assault following an incident where he allegedly brandished a gun at people in another car on the road.

General manager Martin Mayhew said the Lions terminated Berry's contract because of personal conduct which adversely affected the team.

Lions president Tom Lewand said the team has stressed repeatedly that "there will be appropriate consequences when an expected standard of behavior is not upheld.

Detroit Free Press columnist Drew Sharp said the team had little choice, considering it was the sixth arrest of a Lions player this off-season.

"At some point the Lions just had to stand up and say, 'Enough is enough -- start cutting these guys,'" Sharp said in an interview with WWJ Newsradio 950. "If they're gonna be this stupid, knowing full well ... the reputation of this team has gotten even worse, nationally, because of all the nonsense in the off season, the Lions had no choice but to cut him loose."

The arrest was the second of the off-season for Berry, who was arrested last month in Pennsylvania for drunken driving after allegedly hitting a parked car.

Training camp gets into full swing on Thursday.  Berry was an undrafted rookie who was expected to start this year.
