Local Merchant Hopes For A Really Big Shoe Giveaway To Start School Year

DETROIT (WWJ) - The start of school is still weeks away, but there's a big shoe giveaway planned for thousands of Detroit Public School students heading back to class.

Christian Dorsey is co-owner of Bob's Classic Kicks shoe store in Detroit and he and his partner tell WWJ 950's Stephanie Davis they want to give every DPS high school student a pair of nice gym shoes, but only to those who are in school on count day in October.

"We wanted to give them incentive for coming to school for that day a pizza party, I'm not saying there is anything wrong with a pizza party but I think a pair of shoes can go a long way," said Dorsey.

Dorsey estimates they will give away around 10,000 shoes and he'll look to sponsors and fundraisers to help cover the cost.

What kind of shoe will kids get?

"It's going to be a nice pair of Nike, an all black- leather pair of Nike," said Dorsey.
