LONDON (WWJ) - Two metro-area swimmers have medaled on Day 1 of the London 2012 Olympic Games at the Aquatics Center.

Canton’s Allison Schmitt won bronze in the women’s 400-meter freestyle relay, while Rochester Hills resident Peter Vanderkaay won in the men’s competition.

In June, Schmitt has added another race to her growing Olympic schedule, winning the 200-meter freestyle at the U.S. swimming trials, breaking her own 200 freestyle record.

Vanderkaay is now a four-time Olympic medalist with two gold and two bronze to his name. This is his third consecutive trip to the summer Olympics.

It’s the second time Schmitt has made an appearance at the Olympic games.
