Warren Police Release Video Of Officer Shooting

WARREN (WWJ) - Warren police have released video of a shooting  early Wednesday morning in which a police officer was hurt and another man killed.

Officer Don Viars, 35, was saved from serious injury by his bulletproof vest. Police shot and killed 53-year-old Robert Day, who they said would not put his gun down when ordered to do so.

Warren Police Commissioner Jere Green says 35-year-old Officer Don Viars is recovering and supports the release of the video.

"It's often talked about, you know, in the public the inherent danger in police work," said Green. "And Officer Viars felt it was important, and so do I, to validate that and validate that with a glimpse of reality."

Green said they are still investigating the case in which police believe Day went to the home in a dispute over how much two roommates were paying an escort for her services. He said the two men are cooperating, and he's not sure if they will face charges.
