Macomb County Soldier Killed In Afghanistan

FRASER (WWJ/AP) - A Macomb County man was one of two soldiers killed earlier this week during an explosion in Afghanistan.

The Defense Department reports that 25-year-old 1st Lt. Todd Lambka of Fraser died Aug. 1 when an improvised explosive device detonated in Paktika province.

Private first-class Jesus Lopez of San Bernardino, Calif., also was killed. Lopez was 22.

Lambka and Lopez were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division in Fort Riley, Kan.

In a separate roadside bombing incident on the same day, a Michigan National Guard soldier was killed and four other Michigan soldiers were injured while on foot patrol in Salim Aka, Afghanistan.

The Defense Department said 25-year-old Spc. Kyle McClain was killed in the explosion. Injured were Staff Sgt. Robert Drebenstedt, 29, of Charlevoix, Spec. William Barnett, 24, of Ypsilanti, Spec. Steven Nelson, 26, of Dollar Bay and Pvt. Joshua Colon, 20, of Grand Rapids. Read more, here.
