Dive Team Recovers The Body Of One Of The Missing Swimmers

VAN BUREN (WWJ) - Van Buren Police and Fire are telling WWJ that the body of one of the missing swimmers has been discovered at Belleville Lake.

Van Buren Police Sergeant Bart DeVos said they are still searching for another individual. Sergeant DeVos said the two swimmers, a male and a female, were with a friend who claims the pair went under the water -- and never resurfaced.

Sergeant DeVos said there are very few details regarding the incident, but Saturday around 10 p.m.,  a call came in from a worried man who claimed his two friends disappeared in the lake.

"At this point we are still trying to determine whether they have drowned or whether they are on shore - we are still not sure," said DeVos.

Sgt. DeVos says that while the lake has many sandbars -- there's also a part that's dangerous:

"There is also current area to the middle, if they swam toward the middle, there is a strong current," he said.

DeVos said along with dive teams -- a sonar equipped police boat will also be out Sunday morning to scour the waters for the other swimmer.
