College Basketball Coach Goes 'Juice Only' For Cancer

ROCHESTER (WWJ) - A college basketball coach is embarking on a 30-day fast, all in the name of cancer.

Oakland University basketball coach Greg Kampe is supporting Coaches for Cancer by living on an all juice diet beginning August 7.

Kampe, who enters his 29th season as head coach, encourages supporters to pledge a dollar amount for each day he's able to adhere to his juice diet.

"I have had some close friends diagnosed with cancer recently," Kampe said in a statement. "So I felt like this was a good way to raise cancer awareness, while choosing to live a different, healthier lifestyle."

Kampe came up with this idea after watching the documentary "Fat Sick and Nearly Dead" by Joe Cross. The juice diet program was developed by Cross who suffered from obesity and was forced to make a life change or suffer possible death.

Coaches vs. Cancer is a program founded by the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. It empowers schools and communities to join the fight against cancer by participating in a variety national and local events. Through the program, basketball coaches lead fundraising and advocacy efforts that provide individuals a chance to give something back by rallying around an important cause.
