Oakland County Sets Aug. 18 Hazardous Waste Collection: Residents of the 12 North Oakland Household Hazardous Waste communities, including Waterford Township, have a chance to get rid of their household hazardous waste on Saturday, Aug. 18 at Oakland Community College Highland Lakes campus. Waterford Township re-joined the program this year. The collection is open to residents of Addison Township, Groveland Township, Lake Angelus, Lake Orion, Leonard, Oakland Township, Orion Township, Oxford, Oxford Township, Rochester, Rochester Hills and Waterford Township. Residents should bring ID with their current address included in order to participate. Residents of Waterford Township must obtain a voucher from the township hall before the collection event. The voucher can be purchased for $10 on the third floor of town hall at the Building Department counter, 5200 Civic Center Drive. Quantities are limited and are on a first come first served basis. Residents may call (248) 674-6240 for additional details. The following communities must pay $10 to participate: Addison Township, Groveland Township, Lake Orion, Leonard, Oakland Township, Orion Township and Rochester Hills. The fee will be collected at the site in exact cash or a check made payable to: Oakland County N0 Haz. Participants also must fill out a registration form that bills the remainder of the collection fee to their communities. The form is available at the site or online at www.nohaz.com, where it can be downloaded and filled out in advance. Residents of Lake Angelus, Oxford Village, Oxford Township, Rochester and Waterford Township must obtain a voucher from their community offices in advance. Residents of non-participating communities should contact their city, village or township office or visit their websites for disposal options. Items collected at the No Haz events include: household paints and stains, antifreeze, gasoline, kitchen and bath cleaners and polishes, mercury and mercury thermometers, aerosols, pesticides, herbicides and computer and electronic equipment. The collection at OCC Highland Lakes is from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. The collection will be held in parking lot G on the north side of the campus. Residents should enter the campus from Hospital Road. No Haz is a consortium of nine Oakland County communities representing 12 local governments that offer residents a safe and environmentally responsible way to dispose of household hazardous waste. Since the program began in 2003, residents of more than 23,000 households have disposed of more than 2.5 million pounds of hazardous materials, which have been recycled or disposed of properly.

Red Cedar Sets NAHUG Meeting: Red Cedar Technologies will host an online meeting of NAHUG, the North American HEEDS User Group, on Wednesday, Aug. 22 at 2 p.m. Eastern time. David Kotre of Johnson Controls Inc. will chair the meeting, which will include the presentations "Galapagos UAV: Soaring to new heights on less fuel," From Domenic Barsotti, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and "Nonparametric Optimization using Tosca" from Mark Miller from FE-Design Optimization. NAHUG is a community of HEEDS users and others interested in discussing applications of HEEDS to solve unique and challenging optimization problems.
