Detroit Police Arrest Suspects In Several Recent Shootings

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee announced during a Friday press conference that progress had been made in two of four recent shootings in Detroit.

While police continue to investigate a rash of shootings in Detroit, Godbee said suspects are in custody in two of the fatal shootings.

Godbee says one man is in custody for the fatal stabbing Wednesday of 55-year-old Leroy Leaper who intervened in a fight between the suspect and a woman.

Also, in the case of John Villneff, a decorated Vietnam Veteran, Chief Godbee says a person of interest is in custody and there could be more arrests.

Villneff died protecting his 16-year-old grandson.

A third case police are investigating involves the deaths of two teens killed during an apparent drive-by shooting on the northwest side of Detroit.

"I am supremely confident ... this case is eminently closable - we are zeroing in on suspects," said Godbee speaking of the case of the two teens killed.

Meanwhile, in the fourth case; Latoiya Mitchell, 28, a suspect in the shooting outside the Detroit Princess Riverboat Monday, has turned herself in.

Godbee stated during the press conference that police believed that Mitchell was in the area and that they, "were coming for her," and that she should turn herself in immediately.
