Some Lansing Residents Deal With Foul Odor

LANSING (WWJ/AP) - Some people in Lansing say they've been dealing with a foul-smelling situation for more than a week.

The smell is believed to be from a large coal pile at a storage site near their homes that started smoldering, WILX-TV reported. Yellow smoke was reported coming off the pile.

Area resident Rusty Jenkins, who can see the coal pile from his backyard, said it's a choking, coal-like smell that gets unbearable at times.

"There's been days where we've had to breath through towels and close up the whole house," he told WILX-TV.

The Lansing Fire Department said the coal is on private property and it's up to the owners to take care of it. The owners say they're gathering information on the situation.
