3 Killed In Head-On I-96 Crash

HOWELL (WWJ) - Three people are dead and another seriously hurt following a crash Sunday afternoon near the I-96/M-59 interchange near Howell.

Police said a Ford Ranger traveling eastbound on I-96 crossed the median and slammed head-on into a Ford Taurus with three people inside. The driver of the Ranger, George Tissen, 54, of Fowlerville, was killed.

Also killed was Charles Wright, 80, of Wyoming, Michigan, who was a passenger in the Taurus.  Another passenger, Susan Bloomstein, 49, also of Wyoming, was pronounced dead at a University of Michigan hospital a short time later.  Driving the car was  her husband, Legrand Bloomstine, 57, who was listed in serious condition at UM hospital Monday morning.

A witness at the scene said it appears Tissen may have suffered a medical problem before he crossed the median.

Westbound I-96 was closed in the area for several hours following the crash but has since reopened.

The crash remains under investigation.
