EPA Sets Ironwood Manufactured Gas Plant Public Meeting Aug. 22

CHICAGO — The United States Environmental Protection Agency will hold an information session Wednesday, Aug. 22, to share details  about its cleanup plan for the Ironwood Manufactured Gas Plant Site in the Upper Peninsula’s Ironwood.

EPA’s open house will be at 5:30 p.m. at the Ironwood City Hall, 213 S. Marquette St.  Agency representatives will make a presentation and be available to answer questions.

EPA’s planned cleanup at the former Ironwood Manufactured Gas Plant will begin in August and continue until fall.  Hazardous substances from buried coal tar and process waste materials continue to move into the surrounding soil, ground water and sediment of the Montreal River.

The city of Ironwood, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Michigan Department of Community Health, Wisconsin Department of Health Services and the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department are assisting with this cleanup.
