DUNDEE (AP) - The United Auto Workers union says its members at Chrysler Group’s engine plant in Dundee have overwhelmingly rejected a tentative labor agreement.

The Detroit News reported Thursday that about 73 percent of those voting opposed the proposed local contract. The southeastern Michigan plant has about 650 hourly workers and is Chrysler’s only four-cylinder engine plant in the U.S.

Tom Zimmerman is plant chairman for UAW Local 723 and says he thought the local deal was a “good win-win contract.” He says he and other local union leaders are trying to figure out what went wrong in their effort to win approval for the deal.

Chrysler spokeswoman Jodi Tinson says the 2009 contract with the UAW dating from the automaker’s bankruptcy proceedings bars workers from striking.
