Lions Show They Need Work On Special Teams
Nobody talks about special teams until they cost you a game. The Lions don't want to wait that long. They are talking a lot about special teams this week because, frankly, the coverage units have been awful through two exhibition games.
"We've got to find better players to be able to execute," coach Jim Schwartz said. "You can do all the drills you want, if a guy can't make a play, he can't make a play. We've got to find guys who can, particularly on our punt and kickoff cover teams. We were poor in those areas."
It's doubly frustrating for the Lions because they dumped a lot of resources into those units. Six of their seven draft picks were selected at least partly because of their potential to play special teams.
