Man Arrested After Armed Standoff Outside Wal-Mart

TOLEDO (WWJ) - One man is in custody after a police standoff at a Toledo-area Wal-Mart.

The suspect had been holed up with a gun inside a camper in the parking lot of the store in Sylvania Township, near I-475 and US-23. About 30 customers and employees were locked inside the store while police negotiated with the man.

Among them was shopper, Teresa Caverly, who spoke with WTOL-CBS TV in Toledo.

"We came in around, I wanna say 1:30 or 1:45 maybe, and we were here for maybe 15 minutes. And we went to go leave and as soon as we got to the door the manager was kind of stopping everyone and saying you can't leave," Caverly said.

"The first hour and a half was kind of stressful because we didn't know what was going on," she said. "And at first they let us stay by the doors and then they kinda backed us up because the guy had a gun."

Police forced the gunman out with tear gas around 6 a.m.  No one was hurt.

The man's name was not immediately released.
