Woman Attacked By Pit Bulls Outside Detroit Hospital

DETROIT (WWJ) - A woman is recovering after suffering a vicious dog attack outside of Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit Saturday morning.

A hospital employee told WWJ Newsradio 950 the woman, who is also a hospital employee, was walking through the employee parking lot when two pit bulls attacked her near Pallister and Byron streets on the city's west side.

Officials at Henry Ford Hospital confirmed that they are treating a victim for dog bites and that person is in fair condition.

WWJ's Beth Fisher talked to witnesses at the scene, who said either security guards or police officers shot and killed the dogs to get them off of the woman. Detroit Police Sgt. Eren Stephens confirmed that the dogs were shot.

Sheryl, who lives nearby the hospital, had just started her morning when she heard the commotion.

"I heard a lady screaming real loud and then after that I heard a gunshot, a bunch of gunshots, more than five gunshots, and then a few minutes later I heard about five or six more gunshots," she said.

AJ Vickers, who lives across from the hospital, said dogs are common in the area, but not stray ones.

"I never see stray dogs, I always see dogs on leashes. That was the first time around here that an accident has happened like that. Especially with one of the employees over here, because they're always out here," she said.

But another man who lives in the area doesn't think the dogs were strays.

"They're good at getting out. No matter how good you tie them up and everything, they still find a way of getting out," he said.
