No. 1 Azarenka, American Wild Card Burdette Advance At US Open

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — The first two days of the US Open featured mostly quick, one-sided matches. It was more of the same early on Wednesday.

Top-seeded Victoria Azarenka advanced to the third round with a straight-set win over qualifier Kirsten Flipkens.

Azarenka won 6-2, 6-2 in 65 minutes Wednesday. The Australian Open champ from Belarus has never been past the fourth round at Flushing Meadows.

Flipkens, a 133rd-ranked Belgian, beat 60th-ranked Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic in the first round.

Azarenka has lost just five games through her first two matches at this year's Open.

Also on Wednesday, American Mallory Burdette moved through to the third round in her Grand Slam debut.

The 252nd-ranked Stanford All-American beat Lucie Hradecka 6-2, 6-4. The 21-year-old from Georgia was this year's NCAA singles runner-up to teammate Nicole Gibbs.

Burdette got in on a wild card as the American woman who earned the most points on the USTA Pro Circuit this summer. Last month, she won her first WTA match at the Stanford tournament.

The 69th-ranked Hradecka is the highest-ranked opponent Burdette has defeated. The Czech doubles specialist beat 27th-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues in the first round. Hradecka has never reached the third round at a Grand Slam event.

Burdette saved all six break points she faced Wednesday. She had 21 winners to 13 for Hradecka.
