Detroit Expands Curb-Side Recycling Program

DETROIT (WWJ) – Curb-side recycling is expanding in Detroit.

Starting this week, about 5,000 households on the city’s northwest side will join the 24,000 homes that already have their recycling picked up. The expansion is a response to requests put forth by Detroiters during “Detroit Works” community meetings.

Curbside recycling for an additional 5,000 houses will start by the end of the month.

“We listened to you,” said Mayor Dave Bing.  “A recurring theme was that our city’s stable, vibrant neighborhoods needed to be ‘green-friendly’ and have convenient options to promote recycling.”

Residents without curbside recycling in Detroit are still encouraged to recycle. People can drop off recyclable items for free at any of the five Detroit Public Works drop-off centers and locations operated by Recycle Here.

Kory Trinks, who lives in Detroit’s Palmer Woods neighborhood, likes the idea.

“As a whole the community should be recycling. We’re not going to be able to bury our trash forever, or burn it,” Trinks said. “So, recycling’s a good step I think.”

As part of its efforts to promote recycling, DPW crews will also provide recycling containers for the four Detroit Public Schools in the Detroit Works Projects areas to encourage students and teachers to recycle at school.
