ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The University of Michigan men’s basketball team earned the No. 1 overall seed and will serve as one of four regional hosts of the 2012 NIT Season Tip-Off, the NCAA announced today (Tuesday, Sept. 11).

Hosting the North Regional Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 12-13, at the newly renovated Crisler Center, No. 1 seed U-M plays IUPUI on Monday at 9 p.m. on ESPNU, while No. 7 seed Cleveland State and Bowling Green precede the Maize and Blue’s game at 6 p.m.

The Wolverines will play in the North Regional championship or consolation game against either Cleveland State or Bowling Green on Tuesday at 8 p.m. on ESPN2, with IUPUI’s second-round game played at 5 p.m. The overall winner of the North Regional advances to play in the championship rounds at Madison Square Garden in New York, where the semifinals will be played on Wednesday, Nov. 21, and championship/consolation games will be held on Friday, Nov. 23.

In addition to the North Regional matchups, No. 4 seed Pittsburgh hosts the East Regional with Fordham, Lehigh and Robert Morris; No. 3 Kansas State hosts the Midwest Regional with Lamar, North Texas and Alabama-Huntsville; and No. 2 Virginia hosts the South Regional with Fairfield, Delaware and Penn.

Semifinal bracketing for the regional sites will be North (U-M) vs. East (Pittsburgh) and Midwest (Kansas State) vs. South (Virginia).

If the Wolverines do not advance to New York, they will host a consolation round Monday, Nov. 19, and Tuesday, Nov. 20. Game opponents and times will be announced once the teams are determined. Participating teams will not play any team twice and will be assigned to the most geographically compatible site.
