Sandwich Showdown: Get Your Hero On Panera Bread's Menu

DETROIT (WWJ) - So, you think you can make a great sandwich? Panera Bread is giving metro Detroiters the chance to prove it in their "Sandwich Showdown" contest.

To enter the contest, participants should visit www.tlc.com/Panera and create a new sandwich recipe using the online sandwich-builder tool. Each entrant will then chose up to, but no more than, 20 total ingredients to make their legendary sandwich, and provide a personal story behind the sandwich recipe.

From Oct. 8 to 15, a panel of judges will review each entry and select 20 finalists, whose sandwiches will be scored on the following criteria:

  • Taste appeal (75%)
  • Story behind the sandwich (5%)
  • Creativity of the recipe (15%)
  • Ability to easily recreate the sandwich at Panera Bread bakery-cafes (5%)

Then, from Oct. 22 to Nov. 11, photos of the top 20 sandwiches will be posted online and the public will vote on which sandwich they like the best.

"We're going to be offering the winning sandwich on all of our bakery-cafes menus across the country. So, you know, thinking about somebody in the metro Detroit area having their sandwich on all of the menu panels across the country would be pretty exciting," said Kelley Nicholson, Regional Marketing Manager for Panera.

The winner will also take home a $10,000 cash prize, $500 in Panera gift cards and a year of free bagels. There's also cash and food prizes for the rest of the top winning entries as well.

"It not only allows for the submitter to tell us what they want to see on our menu, but it also allows for the rest of the country to chime in and say 'We want to see this.' It's a fun and engaging way to tell our customers that we care about them and that their opinions matter to us," said Nicholson.

Deadline for entry is October 6. For more information and to enter, visit www.tlc.com/Panera.
