Brooksie Way Fundraiser Draws Support From Across County Lines

OAKLAND COUNTY (WWJ) - A show of support for L. Brooks Patterson's speedy recovery as area political leaders unite to run an annual race the Oakland County Executive founded in honor of his late son.

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano and Macomb Executive Mark Hackel have formed a team to run the "Brooksie Way Half Marathon and 5K run, Sunday morning.

The event has raised $90,000 for health and fitness mini-grants in its first five years. And there have been even more donors this year, following Patterson's involvement in a serious car crash.

"There have been some donations that have come in because of that - I know that there are a lot of folks that support Brooks and have sent donations in," said run director Deb Kiertzner.

Patterson started the event after his son died in a snow mobile accident in 2007.
