Media Focus On Homecoming Court Member Stings Some High Schoolers

WEST BRANCH (WWJ) - The media publicity continues for the bullied West Branch, Michigan teen who, as a prank, was named to her high school homecoming court.

Whitney Kropp appeared on Tuesday's Katie Couric Show and talked about going to last weekend's homecoming game and dance. The small town of West Branch has never had this much attention, and Whitney says some didn't like it.

"There have been some kids ... who have been giving me and my sister negative attention towards it - saying how - this is our fault for bringing the media into it. We could not have brought out our story, which I am glad the story had gone out, so that way this generation, and future generations can see what's going on and maybe prevent it, even stop it," said Kropp.

Earlier in the month, Kropp learned from classmates that she was nominated to the homecoming court as a prank.

While the high school sophomore said she had thoughts of suicide after learning of the cruel joke, the small town rallied around the teen, a support Whitney Kropp Facebook page was created and Kropp turned the tables on the pranksters – enjoying herself as part of the homecoming court Friday evening.

After news of the prank surfaced, A Facebook page created for Whitney received 140,000 likes and donations came in from all over the world, including a free stretch Hummer limo -- and flowers from China.

According to the Associated Press she was escorted to the field by her father and grandfather as everyone including the opposing team cheered Kropp on with banners.
