Southgate's First Chief Of Police Dies At 87
BELLEVILLE (WWJ) - Southgate's first chief of police is being remembered as a generous man who always helped the less fortunate.
A Marine Corps veteran and WWII Iwo Jima survivor, 87-year-old William Bert Shaffer joined the Ecorse Township police force in 1951 before becoming police chief of Southgate in 1958.
He died of natural causes at his home in Belleville on September 29.
Other survivors include his wife, Mary; sons; William and Terry Shaffer; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Burial is at Michigan Memorial Park in Flat Rock.
