Man Faces Manslaughter Charge In Gun Club Shooting

BRIGHTON TOWNSHIP (AP) – A 19-year-old Howell man has been charged in a fatal shooting at a southeast Michigan gun club.

Jessce Stearn was arraigned Wednesday on manslaughter and felony firearms counts in the slaying of 19-year-old Charles Kimball of Howell Township.

Kimball was fatally shot June 30 at the Livingston Conservation & Sports Association in Brighton Township, northwest of Detroit.
Police say Stearn was holding a replica AK-47 when it discharged and hit Kimball in the head, killing him instantly. Stearn told police the weapon discharged while he was cleaning the weapon.

Livingston County Prosecutor David Morse tells WHMI-FM that he can’t discuss the case, but says a manslaughter charge means the defendant didn’t intend to kill Kimball.

Stearn remains held on a $250,000 cash bond. He’s due back in court Oct. 31.
