Man Sentenced In Death Of 6-Month-Old Son

LANSING (AP) - A 28-year-old East Lansing man has been sentenced to life in prison without parole in the death of his 6-month-old son.

The Lansing State Journal reports Yumar Burks was given the mandatory term Wednesday for felony murder. An Ingham County Circuit Court jury in Lansing last month also convicted him of first-degree child abuse. Burks had testified that Antonio's death was an accident.

Defense lawyer Tom Clement says an appeal is planned.

Burks testified that Antonio died after he tried to revive him in March 2011. Burks described using "adult CPR" as he tried to revive Antonio. He also says he struck the infant multiple times during CPR.

Police have said Burks told them he fell asleep on top of Antonio, woke up and heard him gasping.
