U-M Balks At Talk Of Cancellation Of Winter Classic

ANN ARBOR (WWJ) - Talk of possible cancellation of the Winter Classic is being refuted by U of M.

One report out of Minnesota says the event, set to take place at the Big House on New Year's Day, will officially be canceled next week.

But University of Michigan Associate Athletic Director David Ablauf says they haven't heard anything like that.

"The definitive source is the NHL, they are the ones who run the Winter Classic, you know with the rumors you either got really good ones from the NHL or your information is obviously inaccurate," Ablauf said.

The report-- from a Minnesota newspaper-- cites an unnamed source with the league... who says the Winter Classic's cancellation will be announced next week.

"Until we hear from the NHL, we as an athletic department, at the University of Michigan are planing to continue to work forward as if the Winter Classic is being held January first, because we are in the process of making preparations," said Ablauf.

Ablauf adds that there is no deadline date in place before the Winter Classic would be canceled. Meantime, the NHL today officially canceled all of its November games because of the ongoing lockout.
