2,200 Tips Received In Random Freeway Shootings

WIXOM (WWJ) - Tips continue to roll in on the suspect believed to be behind two dozen apparently random freeway shootings from Wixom to Lansing.

Authorities say they've received more than 2,200 tips from the public and the information ranges from useful to trivial. More 80 members of law enforcement are now working on the case, following more than 25 reports of cars being fired at across four counties.

But Ingham County Sheriff Gene Wriggelsworth says, either way, keep the tips coming.

"I don't mean to trivialize anything," he told reporters on Thursday. "If people have some information, you get it to us and we'll determine whether it's of value or not. But when you get this time of a crime scene, over a hundred miles long, you're going to get some tips that are out there a little bit -- but we're looking through it."

The reward for a tip leading to an arrest and conviction in the case is now up to $102,000.

Wriggelsworth said police patrols will be beefed up this weekend to keep Michigan State football travelers driving along I-96 safe. Several of the shootings have occurred along that freeway.

So far, only a single injury has been reported.  A man was shot in his backside while driving on I-96 near the Fowlerville exit Saturday. He is expected to be OK.
