CIMdata Publishes White Paper On Remote 3D Visualization, PLM Geographic Analysis

ANN ARBOR -- CIMdata Inc., a PLM consulting and research firm, Tuesday announced the publication of a white paper on real-world applications of remote 3D visualization, as well as the release of the CIMdata 2012 PLM Geographic Analysis Report, the fifth of five modules of the CIMdata PLM Market Analysis Report Series.

The white paper, titled "Remote 3D Visualization Simplifying and Delivering Mobile PLM,"  discusses how graphical content files are still too large to easily transfer using the Internet or company wide area networks. Historically, high-powered desktop computers with dedicated 3D graphics hardware have been required to support data creation and modification.

In addition, due to large file sizes, the 3D data needed to be on the local network, since opening the files from remote servers was too time-consuming.

Over the last few decades, businesses have become much more global. Medium-sized and even small businesses are able to leverage resources around the globe due to advances in transportation, logistics, computing, and communication technologies. "Design Anywhere, Build Anywhere" has become an important strategy to take advantage of distributed resources for delivering better products faster and at lower cost. To execute this strategy, the right data and applications have to be accessible to the right people at the right time, independent of where the people are located.

At CIMdata, our research into remote 3D visualization and virtualization technology has shown that their benefits are real. Data access and security issues can be addressed by leveraging remote 3D visualization technology. The latest iterations of virtualization allow predictable, scalable computer performance to be distributed efficiently for the rendering and visualization of large graphical data sets. Upcoming enhancements in graphics-processing unit (GPU) virtualization will make the technology even more cost effective and flexible.

In this paper, CIMdata reviews business issues associated with data and 3D applications that can now be addressed by remote access technology. This paper also includes an overview of virtualization -- a key technology that facilitates flexible cost-effective implementation of a 3D visualization strategy.

The release of the CIMdata 2012 PLM Geographic Analysis Report, meanwhile,  provides detailed information and in-depth analysis on the worldwide PLM market during 2011. It contains analyses of major trends and issues, leading PLM providers, revenue analyses for geographical regions -- the Americas, Europe-Middle East-Africa, and Asia-Pacific -- industry sectors, and historical and projected data on market growth.

"While the global economy sputtered, the PLM economy grew faster in 2011 than in 2010, which was a very good year," according to Stan Przybylinski, CIMdata's director of research, "Most segments of the market that CIMdata tracks saw high double digit growth, with very strong license sales. Given that new license sales are often precursors to more software and services investment, this is a strong indicator that 2012 could be another solid year for PLM solution and services providers. CIMdata estimates that in calendar year 2011 the Mainstream PLM market grew approximately 10.5 percent in the Americas, almost 10 percent in EMEA, and just under 24 percent in Asia-Pacific."

The report also provides insights into the collaborative Product Definition management (cPDm) spend in specific countries within each geographic region. CIMdata's estimates for calendar years 2011 and forecasts for 2012 to 2016 are provided for each segment. The report also provides detailed estimates for the leading solution providers for each geography covered.

The CIMdata PLM Market Analysis Report Series is available as a five-module set or each module can be purchased separately. It is also available as part of the CIMdata PLM Community Gold Membership. Further details and pricing information about the report and Community Memberships are available at www.CIMdata.com.
